ccording to travel experts, shopping is the most popular activity for vacationers.
For both the locals and tourists, Utah offers a variety of shopping destinations by way of strip malls, conventional malls, retail blocks, downtown shopping districts and factory outlets.

Trolley Square

Trolley Square is a historic mission-style collection of vintage trolley-car barns that were remodeled into a marketplace filled with over 80 unique shops, restaurants, and entertainment centers. The four red-brick barns, which housed a turn of the century trolley system, were built in 1908. Trolley Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Antique lighting fixtures from the old downtown streets illuminate the square. Architectural features from nearby historic mansions highlight the square’s interior design. Trolley Square welcomes over 3 million customers each year. Its landmark water tower has become an icon with its 97 ft. height. The tower is original to the Square and was designed to hold 50,000 gallons of water in case of fire. Location: 600 South 700 East – www.trolleysquare.com

The Gateway

Traditionalists may cling to the old-school charm of Main Street retail, but everyone else will gravitate toward The Gateway Mall for some serious shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Gateway is the largest shopping area in Salt Lake – part of a larger complex that includes condominiums and office buildings – and has the unusual distinction of riding the line between sophistication and amusement park fanfare. The mall is Salt Lake’s only open-air shopping and also features the Olympic Legacy Plaza and historic Union Pacific Depot. Location: 200 South 400 West – www.shopthegateway.com

Jordan Landing

Jordan Landing now in its eighth year of business and exceeding the goals it set for itself is located in West Jordan, Utah. Jordan Landing broke ground in September 1999 with a Cinemark 24 screen, 5,600 seat movie theater. Soon came a WalMart Supercenter, Sam’s Club, Kohl’s, Sears Grand, and Lowe’s, with over 40 other retail stores. Newest to Jordan Landing is Target and Best Buy. Upon completion, there will be about 1.4 million square feet of retail space at the 500 acre site. Location: 7000 South Bangerter Highway – www.jordanlanding.net

South Towne Center

This center claims the title of “Utah’s Largest Shopping Destination.” The mall has two levels and more than 150 shops, as well as giants such as JCPenney, Dillards and Mervyns. There is also a bevy of smaller stores, such as The Children’s Place, Victoria’s Secret and REI. The mall hosts a slew of community events, including a local farmers market on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer. Location: 10450 South State Street – www.southtownecenter.com

Foothill Village

Originally constructed in 1956, Foothill Village was Utah’s first shopping center located only 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. With a renovation in 1969, and expansion in 1987, the shopping center is now 275,000 square feet. Foothill Village, most known for its upscale, outdoor retail mall, also houses indoor offices. The east-bench shopping center features an extensive mix of more than 70 stores and offices, including apparel, art, specialty shops, home, health and wellness, grocery and restaurants. The Foothill Village merchant mix easily caters to the needs of customers and their lifestyles. Location: 1300 South Foothill Drive – www.foothillvillage.com

Gardner Village

Gardner Village contains the outlines of the once bustling early Utah mill industry and history. What remains today is a cluster of retail specialty shops located in restored cabins, houses and buildings nestled adjacent to the Gardner Mill. Now listed on the National Historic Register, the old flour mill is home to Archibald’s Restaurant and Country Furniture & Gifts. Vintage pioneer architecture, antique fixtures, red brick paths and bridges over a pond, create a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for shopping, dining and discovering some of Utah’s most colorful history. Location: 1100 West 7800 South – www.gardnervillage.com

Cottonwood Mall

On July 5, 2007 General Growth Properties announced that it will rebuild Cottonwood Mall, replacing the conventional enclosed mall with a mixed-use development of fashionable shops, residences, offices, streets conducive to strolling, riverside trails, and a public plaza that will become a community gathering place. By 2010, Cottonwood Mall will look nothing like its present form – it will be a highly desirable place to live, shop, dine and work. Construction will begin Fall, 2007. Location: 4835 S. Highland Drive – www.mycottonwoodmall.com.
