vacationers. For both the locals and |
tourists, Utah offers a variety of shopping destinations by way of strip malls, conventional malls, retail blocks, downtown shopping districts and factory outlets.
The Downtown Malls
Crossroads Plaza and The ZCMI Center offer shops ranging from world-famous department stores like Nordstrom, Meier and Frank, and Mervyn’s to eateries, and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
Trolley Square
Trolley Square is a historic mission-style collection of vintage trolley-car barns that were remodeled into a marketplace filled with about 80 retailers. The four red-brick barns, which housed a turn of the century trolley system, were built in 1908. Trolley Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Antique lighting fixtures from the old downtown streets illuminate the square. Architectural features from nearby historic mansions highlight the square’s interior design.
The Gateway
Traditionalists may cling to the old-school charm of Main Street retail, but everyone else will gravitate toward The Gateway Mall for some serious shopping. The Gateway is the largest shopping area in Salt Lake – part of a larger complex that includes condominiums and office buildings – and has the unusual distinction of riding the line between sophistication and amusement park fanfare.
Jordan Landing

broke ground in September 1999 with a 24 screen, 5,600 movie theater. Soon came a WalMart Supercenter, which by itself draws 65,000 people. There are over 40 other retail stores. Upon completion, there will be about 1.4 million square feet of retail space at the 500 acre site.
South Towne Center
This center claims the title of “Utah’s Largest Shopping Destination.” The mall has two levels and more than 150 shops, as well as giants such as JCPenney, Dillards’ and Mervyns. There is also a bevy of smaller stores, such as The Children’s Place, Victoria’s Secret and REI. The mall hosts a slew of community events, including a local farmers market on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer.
Foothill Village
Originally constructed in 1956, Foothill Village was Utah’s first shopping center located only 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. With a renovation in 1969, and expansion in 1987, the shopping center is now 275,000 square feet. Foothill Village, most known for its upscale, outdoor retail mall, also houses indoor offices. The east-bench shopping center features an extensive mix of more than 70 stores and offices, including apparel, art, specialty shops, home, health and wellness, grocery and restaurants. The Foothill Village merchant mix easily caters to the needs of customers and their lifestyles.
Tanger Outlet Mall
Shop Tanger Outlet Center in Park City, UT and buy direct from over 60 brand name manufacturer and designer outlet stores. Located just a few minutes from The Canyons, Park City Resort, and Deer Valley, it’s not only a favorite for the tourist, but the locals as well. |
