Retailers in Utah

According to travel experts, shopping is the most popular activity for vacationers. For both the locals and tourists, Utah offers a variety of shopping destinations by way of strip malls, conventional malls, retail blocks, downtown shopping districts and factory outlets.

The top shopping places are likely the two malls located in downtown Salt Lake City, Crossroads Plaza and the ZCMI Center, and the most recently opened retail mecca west of downtown called The Gateway. Almost any national retail chain and speciality shop will be found at one of these locations.

The two downtown malls have more than 230 stores. The Gateway features more than 40 retailers, nine full-scale restaurants and 12 movie screens.

Several other busy shopping malls with hundreds of chain stores, speciality shops and restaurants are located throughout Salt Lake, Utah and Weber valleys. Three large factory outlet centers are also located in Utah. Located a short drive from Salt Lake City on the outskirts of Park City is the Factory Stores of Park City.

TROLLEY SQUARE

Trolley Square is a historic mission-style collection of vintage trolley-car barns that were remodeled into a marketplace filled with about 80 retailers. The four red-brick barns, which housed a turn of the century trolley system, were built in 1908. Trolley Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Antique lighting fixtures from the old downtown streets illuminate the square. Architectural features from nearby historic mansions highlight the square’s interior design.

THE GATEWAY

Traditionalists may cling to the old-school charm of Main Street retail, but everyone else will gravitate toward the Gateway mall for some serious shopping. Gateway is the largest shopping area in Salt Lake – part of a larger complex that includes condominiums and office buildings – and has the unusual distinction of riding the line between sophistication and amusement park fanfare.

JORDAN LANDING

Jordan Landing now in its fifth year of business and exceeding the goals it set for itself is located in West Jordan, Utah. Jordan Landing broke ground in September 1999 with a 24 screen, 5,600 movie theater. Soon came a Walmart Supercenter, which by itself draws 65,000 people. There are over 40 other retail stores. Upon completion over the next year, there will be about 1.4 million square feet of retail space at the 500 acre site.

SOUTH TOWNE CENTER

This center claims the title of “Utah’s Largest Shopping Destination”. The mall has two levels and more than 150 shops, as well as giants such as JCPenney, Dillards’ and Mervyns. There also is a bevy of smaller stores, such as The Children’s Place, Victoria’s Secret and REI. The mall hosts a slew of community events, including a local farmers market on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer.

FOOTHILL VILLAGE

Originally constructed in 1956, Foothill Village was Utah’s first shopping center located only 10 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. With a renovation in 1969, and expansion in 1987, the shopping center is now 275,000 square feet. Foothill Village, most known for its upscale, outdoor retail mall, also houses indoor offices. The east-bench shopping center features an extensive mix of more than 70 stores and offices, including apparel, art, speciality shops, home, health and wellness, grocery and restaurants. The Foothill Village merchant mix easily caters to the needs of customers and their lifestyles.
